The proposal to create the journal Sociedad y Ambiente arose in 2011 from Dra. Esperanza Tuñón Pablos, then General Director of El Colegio de la Frontera Sur (ECOSUR, 2008-2013), currently retired and Emeritus Researcher of the Secretaría de Ciencia, Humanidades, Tecnología e Innovación (SECIHTI). Initially, the aim was to address the need for disseminating knowledge, to establish journals as a benchmark of quality for academic institutions, to meet the high demand for publication opportunities, and to position ECOSUR at the forefront of the topics the institution addresses.
The relevance of creating Sociedad y Ambiente also stemmed from the fact that, at the time, only three interdisciplinary academic journals existed in the Registry of Scientific Journals of the then Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT). From the outset, it was envisioned as an open-access, electronic journal with an innovative procedure for the rapid publication of contributions that passed rigorous peer review.
In the journal, we sought to meet all quality requirements, including having an Editorial Board comprised of internationally recognized specialists that collaborate in defining the journal's editorial policy, conducting its periodic evaluation, and formulating proposals for its continuous improvement. Furthermore, we have achieved inclusion in various national and international indexes, catalogs, and directories of journals.
Today, Sociedad y Ambiente stands out as an academic journal and is recognized for its reflections, analyses, and research findings on socio-environmental issues in the country, the region, and the continent.
