Abstract
Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) play a role in fishing activities; however, factors conditioning access to them create digital gaps. This article analyzes how fishers and others linked to the sector use Facebook, WhatsApp, and the PescaData app to support artisanal fishing in Yucatán, as well as the needs and expectations these digital platforms can meet. The methodology involved reviewing PescaData databases provided by Comunidad y Biodiversidad A.C., conducting structured and in-depth interviews, and gathering and analyzing data through intensive digital ethnography to identify the uses. Findings show that Facebook and WhatsApp were the most widely used, whereas PescaData is not yet systematically used by fishers. The primary expectation regarding the latter app is the inclusion of a temporary job board for use during fishing ban periods. The digital gaps hindering app usage are linked to age, gender, and socioeconomic status, thereby limiting access not only to apps but also to government social development programs.
