Artisanal Fishing on the Southern Coast of Jalisco: Reflections on its Research and Management

Abstract

Science plays a fundamental role in fisheries management. However, despite its evident production and accumulation, there is a disconnection with its use in mitigating and solving problems. Analyzing literature to identify research efforts helps to understand how projects have been carried out, as well as to identify trends and knowledge gaps, recognizing some aspects that can promote more responsible fishing. In the present study, we considered scientific information on the fishing subject, focusing on artisanal fishing on the southern coast of Jalisco in the Mexican Central Pacific as a case study. We analyzed the existing scientific information for the area through a critical interpretive approach and identified the disciplinary fields from which the activity has been studied, pointing out the current priorities and needs in its approach. Biological studies are the most common, and social organization issues are poorly addressed despite recognizing their importance. We reflect on the requirements to support the development of coastal fishing and its research in the region, showing how a critical analysis of the literature can contribute for the scientific community and the public sector to identify routes towards a more comprehensive fisheries science and sustainable management.
